What if my property is under insured?

Many insurance companies apply the "Average Clause". An average clause has the effect of reducing a claim in direct proportion to the amount of under insurance. Therefore if you are 20% under insurance you will find that the claim settlement will be reduced by 20%. Clearly this is not a happy situation as a large claim could be reduced by a large amount.
